Funkademia De La Sol

What’s It All About……….

So it’s our 21st birthday soon and we thought we’d do something a bit special to celebrate being Manchester’s longest running club night. In fact, it’s probably the most exciting thing we’ve done since we kicked off 21 years ago at the old Boardwalk… we are launching a Funkademia Festival!

Funkademia De la Sol – An Ibizan weekender of soul-funk, sunshine and sunsets in summer 2017.

We’ve been working on this for some years and have looked at several venues around Europe but kept getting drawn back to our first love – Ibiza. Again we looked at several venues but decided to get away from the nonsense that is San Antonio and the extortionate alternatives and settled for a beautiful, off the beaten track spot – Cala Vadella.

It’s not gonna be a huge rave but more of a discerning, boutique kinda affair and there will be no on-site entry so it’s just our regular Funkademia people and friends.

4 days and nights of solid soul-funk with nice people in a great location.

Tickets, therefore, are advance only and will be strictly limited, so we expect it to sell out sharpish.

To make it work this has to be a joint festival/accommodation ticket.

Accommodation……….

All accommodation is at our partner hotel – Puerto Cala Vadella. We have blocked booked the hotel from Wednesday 17th May – Sunday 21st May 2017 and this is where the main disco shenanigans will take place.

Included in the accommodation is a full breakfast buffet and we’ve negotiated a late wind up of 12 noon which we trust will be appreciated.

The hotel is fantastically situated right on the beautiful Cala Vadella beach & seconds walk from the bars/restaurants. The rooms have cooking facilities/fridge and hotel has a little shop for provisions. If you can’t manage the 30 second walk to the beach the pool is perfect for lazy days and the friendly waiters Jose and Pepe will keep you suitably refreshed from the bar. Food is available (and discounted 20% to De la Sol guests) and a nice cold Estrella is less than 2 euros.

Once you have booked your festival tickets we will be in touch to allocate group rooms.

FAQ……….

Since we were young ‘uns we’ve been going to Ibiza pretty much every year. We’ve always thought it to be both ace and rubbish at the same time. A disco dichotomy if you like. The island is great but many of the venues are just rubbish. They vary from tacky bars full of clowns in full football kits vomiting over each other at half eight to too cool for school places you’ll need to remortgage your house to have a half decent night in. We’ve also never found a club playing quality soul\funk\disco\hip-hop. So we’ve always thought there was a place in Ibiza for a night(s) playing decent music, in a decent venue where they don’t pull your pants down on the drink prices. Hence we’ve created Funkademia de la Sol. Simple.
Wednesday, May 17th until Sunday 21st May inclusive. So arrive Wednesday leave Monday. You can if you want to arrive later (you’ll still have to book a minimum of the 5 nights) or stay longer if you wish.
Ibiza, obviously. A lovely little resort in the south-west corner called Cala Vadella. We found it by accident when half way through a mad, lads holiday we decided to escape the madness of San Antonio & had a tour round the island one day. We’ve been going back ever since. Cala Vadella is unspoilt and very chilled. There’s one road in & one road out. You drive through a pine forest, turn a corner & there is this beautiful horse-shoe cove. No tall, ugly buildings and everything is touching the sandy beach. As a bonus, the resort faces due west so the sunsets can be stunning.
The hotel where it all happens is called Puerto Cala Vadella and we have block booked it for the weekend. It is, in fact, the only hotel in the resort. Independently owned and very Spanish. Rooms are pretty spacious as it is an Apart-Hotel – kind of a cross between apartments and hotel rooms. You get a little kitchenette with basic cooking facilities (and importantly a fridge) in the room. The hotel is well run, very clean and rooms get tidied every day. The bar is great and spreads out onto the poolside area and the two main waiters Jose and Pepe have been there forever and are lovely fella’s who will patiently serve you all day. The best bit about the hotel is the location. It is literally footsteps from the beach. All rooms have decent sized balconies and half the rooms have fantastic sea views (you’ll need to get in early to request these). Included in the accommodation is breakfast. Not just a light continental affair but a full on breakfast buffet. Very generously the hotel has also pushed back the breakfast time to 12noon finish so you can sleep off the night before & set yourself up for the day in a very civilised manner. Breakfast

Once you arrive at the airport simply jump a cab outside & ask for Puerto Cala Vadella (it’s pronounced Badella). A cab can be shared by 4 and it’ll be about 25 euros. You can’t miss the hotel, as you turn the corner into the bay of Cala Vadella its right at the bottom of the hill.
Brilliant. There are 8 restaurants to eat at all of which are right on the beach. All of then are very, very good. All independent family run affairs. No Burger Kings. Food offer is Spanish\Mediterranean and varies from shabby chic shacks such as Bon Sol (which does the best pizza & pasta we’ve ever had), to beach tapas at Can Juane to the more traditional Maria Luiza which specialises in paella. The Hotel also does food and it’s pretty good. The head chef is an old Italian fella who does a mean steak. The manager Miguel has also offered to give all our guests 20% discount on food and it’s not expensive to start with. Perhaps one of the most important things to note is you won’t get your hat nailed on with drink prices in the Hotel. Miguel will put various drink offers on plus a beer, which is quality Estrella Damm, is less than 2 euros. That’s about ten times less than what you’ll pay at some other Ibiza clubs.
During the day we’ll be putting on DJ’s around the pool for our chilled out ‘Float On ‘ sessions and at night the full on club night bit of Funkademia de la Sol will take place in the hotel function room which is adjacent to the bar which, very conveniently, spills out onto the poolside. We’re also organising a couple of external sessions. We have locked in a very cool beach bar to do an afternoon session in Cala Vadella and are negotiating with another venue for something a bit special one night. More details will be revealed asap.
